A global standard for verifying technology

ETV Canada independently verifies the performance claims of innovative environmental technologies, giving purchasers, regulators and developers a credible basis for decision-making.

THE STANDARD

What is ISO 14034?

The International Organization for Standardization (ISO) develops standards used around the world. ISO 14034 is its standard for Environmental Technology Verification (ETV). It sets out the principles and requirements for independently assessing a technology’s environmental performance claims against supporting data. This gives technology developers a consistent way to show what their technology can do.

ETV IN PRACTICE

How does it work?

ETV Canada applies the principles of ISO 14034 when verifying environmental technologies. Through an independent review of performance claims and test data, ETV gives developers credible results they can share with customers, partners and decision makers.

THE BACKGROUND

How ISO 14034 came about?

The International Working Group on Environmental Technology Verification (IWG-ETV) was established in 2007 to develop a common approach that could help countries recognize each other’s verification results.

In 2013, the International Organization for Standardization (ISO) began developing an ETV standard through Technical Committee 207. ISO 14034 was published on November 15, 2016.

Principles for a Common International Approach

Sharing verification protocols and testing methods.

Supporting mutual recognition or accreditation of verification bodies.

Helping countries accept each other’s verification results, where practical.

ISO 14034 in Canada

Verification provides technology developers with credible evidence of performance and gives decision-makers reliable information on which to base procurement and regulatory decisions.

DEMONSTRATE PERFORMANCE

For technology developers

01

A consistent verification process gives innovators a fair way to demonstrate their technology’s performance.

02

Independent results help prospective customers/partners assess new technologies and make informed purchasing decisions.

INFORM APPROVAL DECISIONS

For regulators & authorities

01

In Canada, provincial, territorial and local authorities oversee technology permitting and approvals.

02

ETV provides transparent, independently verified performance information that can support their assessment of new technologies.
